Responsibilities:
The operational excellence and industry-leading on-time performance of Delta Air Lines are acknowledged. In order to forecast, improve, and assess Delta’s scheduled flight (i.e. Block) schedules, we are looking for a Specialist. The output of The Block Team is a vital component in helping Delta meet its financial and on-time goals, which are expectations shared by our customers and shareholders.
- Two main goals fall under the candidate’s purview.
- The ownership of Block Plans from beginning to end is one of the short-term goals. These consist of
- Optimizing and Predicting Initial Block Times
- Keeping an eye out for activities such as airport building, air traffic control, routing, etc. that result in deviation from the original forecast
- Completing a post-month review to determine whether the initial estimate was accurate
- Long-term goals are created to enhance the team’s workflow generally. These consist of
- Front-end and back-end improvements to Delta’s Block Time forecaster
- Bringing the team’s data pipeline and dashboards up to date
Given that Block is important to many Delta departments, this is a very visible role. The applicant will collaborate with several teams (such as Air Traffic Management, Operations Analytics & Performance, Network/Schedule Planning, etc.) and deliver findings to all levels of the organization, from Individual Contributors to Vice Presidents. Success will depend on these collaborations and striking a balance between short- and long-term objectives.
List of duties, which is not exhaustive:
- Take control of everything Block for the market.
- Block schedule forecasting, optimization, and auditing on a monthly basis
- Review of monthly performance, or the correctness of planned blocks after post-analysis
- Identify the causes of forecast mistake and take appropriate action.
- Liaison with OCC Operations Planning and Air Traffic Management to proactively understand changes to Block and adjust the forecast as necessary.
- Ad hoc data insights are provided. Performance enquiries are blocked.
- Bring up pertinent Block concerns in front of people who can make a decision.
- Examine innovative Block forecasting methods that increase precision and decrease learning latency.
- Promote the team’s transition from outdated data pipelines to more affordable models.
- When given basic instructions, produce results
- Set workload priorities to achieve strict deadlines.
- Encourage a collegial atmosphere to take advantage of the team’s pooled intellect.
Requirements:
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM)
- +2 years working in a quantitative discipline that is related to descriptive, predictive, or prescriptive analytics
Awareness of…
- Data sifting (using, for instance, SQL)
- Python, SAS, and other Object-Oriented Programming languages
- Data conduits
- (Excel, Power BI, Tableau, etc.) data visualization
- Strong communication skills in writing, speaking, and presenting (using PowerPoint, for example).
- The capacity to simplify difficult concepts for non-technical people
- Create a narrative using data, supporting evidence, and takeaways that can be applied.
