The person in this position will collaborate with reporters, senior editors, our newsgathering operation, our legal and standards teams, and other members of ABC News Digital’s committed team of editors and content producers to line edit text stories before they are published on ABCNews.com. This person will senior the coverage on Saturdays and work largely throughout the daytime from Tuesday through Saturday.
Although managing all aspects of text stories and occasionally writing stories is a major part of the job, the person in this position is also in charge of organizing other important editorial components, communicating with the wider newsgathering operation, broadcast units, and our audience development team.
The ideal applicant is a thoughtful editor with expertise in overseeing breaking news coverage, delegating stories, and working well under pressure.
The team is using a hybrid strategy for this New York City-based position, spending four days in the office and one day working remotely. The typical hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Responsibilities:
- Text-story assignments and revisions.
- Write breaking news articles as needed.
- Determine what should be reported by working with the news gathering desk.
- Work along with the bookers, correspondents, producers, editors, and reporters.
- Organize coordinated news coverage among many teams.
- Make editorial decisions on an hourly basis.
Requirements:
Basic requirements:
- Editing for a digital news outlet for at least three years.
- Ability to write accurately and quickly under pressure.
- A track record of handling breaking news.
- Ability and motivation to work together across teams.
- The capacity to balance many jobs, projects, and priorities.
- Energizes and improves the environment of the gathering.
Preferred credentials:
- Have experience reporting on important breaking news.
- Knowledge of working with various teams.
- Superior communication abilities
- Necessary Education: A BA or BS from a four-year institution that has been accredited, or the equivalent in work experience.
Desired Education: A journalism master’s degree from a recognized institution of higher learning, or equivalent experience
In New York City, salaries for this position range from $68,200 to $93,830 annually. Internal equity will be taken into consideration when determining the basic pay that is actually offered, and it may also change based on the candidate’s geographic location, job-related knowledge, abilities, and experience, among other things. Depending on the level and job offered, the remuneration package may include a bonus and/or long-term incentive units in addition to the complete range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
