We are seeking qualified and seasoned inpatient coders to join our team as essential members. A excellent candidate for this position has a thorough understanding of medical terminology and a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. This position has a flexible schedule and is entirely remote.
Responsibilities:
- Apply ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, and ICD-10-PCS codes to patient records in order to assign diagnostic and procedure codes.
- Based on the documentation found in medical records, appropriately assign, sequence, and abstract medical codes.
- For the purposes of hospital statistics and reporting, abstract and enter the coded data.
- If appropriate, review the work of Level 1 and Level 2 coders.
- Inform the relevant staff about code problems and potential for documentation enhancement so that they can be followed up on and resolved.
- Sustain a 95% coding accuracy rate, a 95% MS-DRG assignment accuracy rate, and the site-specified productivity standards.
- Maintain site-specific productivity criteria or a minimum production of one chart each hour.
- Professionally discuss clinical and reimbursement issues with coworkers, management, and hospital staff.
- Use a VPN to access work-related tasks.
- When required, travel (if applicable)
- Respect all company and HIM Division guidelines and directives.
- Maintain professional credentials by keeping track of your continuing education credits.
- Participate in mandated sponsored education and/or in-service meetings (as necessary)
- Respect the code of ethics established by the American Health Information Management Association.
- Take and pass the yearly HIPAA Introductory Test as well as any further tests that are administered.
Requirements:
- Three years or more of experience working in an IP coding facility
- CCS, RHIT, or RHIA certificates are preferred.
- Strong communication abilities both in writing and speaking
Extra credit if:
- A certificate program from the AAPC with a CCS is preferable, as is an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an AHIMA-certified HIM program or nursing program.
- Three or more years of experience coding in a medical setting or as a consultant.
- Familiarity with digital encoding and software abstraction.
