Mapbox is seeking a passionate Software Development Engineer II (SDEII) to join our Data Platform team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in enhancing Mapbox’s foundation by developing internal developer tools and services. Here’s what you can expect:

Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to Mapbox Engineers by building infrastructure and tools tailored to their needs.
  • Contribute to our high-capacity ingestion systems handling terabytes of data daily.
  • Shape and execute our Platform strategy, encompassing various sub-teams across the company.
  • Strengthen and streamline Mapbox’s processes and tools for data processing and querying on AWS, focusing on security and efficiency.
  • Participate in the development of our data processing systems, responsible for launching thousands of EMR clusters daily and managing petabyte-scale data lakes.
  • Foster a culture of operational excellence by rigorously testing and monitoring systems, with an on-call commitment to ensure service health.
  • Design forward-looking systems to facilitate Mapbox’s rapid growth.
  • Document your work and decision-making processes, and effectively lead presentations and discussions.
  • Promote collaboration, transparency, creativity, inclusion, and data-driven decision-making.

Requirements:

  • Located in the US/Canada Eastern Time Zone.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant industry engineering experience.
  • Strong passion for developing internal tools and infrastructure for Mapbox Engineers.
  • Proven ability to design, develop, and secure infrastructure on AWS.
  • Proficiency in Java or Scala, Python, Spark, Airflow, Snowflake, and AWS services (including Kinesis, EMR, ECS, Fargate).
  • Demonstrated track record of creating secure, self-service tools for developers with a customer-centric mindset.
  • Desire to share expertise through documentation and mentorship.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Autonomy and proactive approach in completing tasks, even in ambiguous situations.
