As a Research Associate at Stand.earth, you will collaborate with the Senior Researcher and various departments within the organization to design and maintain research tools and analytics that enhance research quality, data transparency, and innovative data visualizations. Your role involves working with large datasets, coding in R and/or Python, and contributing to research excellence in a mission-driven environment.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, maintain, and optimize research tools used by Stand.earth.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of major research databases.
- Coordinate database updates, perform error testing, and ensure data quality.
- Establish internal communication channels with data analysts from other departments and create workflows for web-based tools and visualizations.
- Innovate techniques in R and other platforms to advance research methodology and data visualization.
- Manage and analyze large datasets and databases efficiently.
- Research data sources and evaluate their relevance for campaign objectives.
- Utilize data visualization, query methods, and dashboards to extract insights, provide strategic recommendations, and enhance campaign impact.
- Respond to data support requests from research and campaign teams.
- Contribute to research projects, reports, and grant applications as needed.
Requirements:
Required Skills:
- Master’s degree in an environmental research-related field (preferred), or an undergraduate degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of coding experience in R and/or Python for data cleaning, database design, and data analysis.
- Proficiency in spreadsheet formulas and advanced database skills, including VLOOKUPS, pivot tables, and nested formulas.
- Demonstrated experience in analytical research, data management, statistical analysis, model creation, and methodology development.
- Ability to conduct scientific literature reviews.
- Familiarity with Stand.earth’s key focus areas, such as deforestation-driven commodities, oil and gas, petrochemicals, supply chains, financial markets, and the environmental and social impacts of natural resource extraction.
Desired Skills (Not Required):
- Experience with writing and using SQL for data management or working with APIs.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools like Google Data Studio, Tableau, Power BI.
- Involvement or volunteering in climate, environmental protection, and/or environmental justice issues.
