Position Description

Community Music Center of Boston (CMCB) is looking for a Chief Programming Officer (CPO) who can provide leadership for its ecosystem of 3,000 weekly students, 20 partner organizations, and 50+ teaching artists and music therapists. The CPO will be responsible for monitoring and shaping CMCB’s direct services, arts instruction in school and after-school, music therapy and behavioral health programs, culturally-specific arts initiatives related to racial equity, and youth economic empowerment and workforce development. The successful candidate must be capable of promoting a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

– Ensure the highest level of programs, services, and facilities that meet the needs of a diverse community.
– Integrate existing and new programming
– Identify and promote innovative programming
– Use quantitative skills to guide the programs team’s assessment of data about pedagogical outputs and outcomes
– Develop and strengthen a culture of accountability and data-based decision making
– Translate organizational vision and strategy into executable program goals
– Lead, manage, and inspire CMCB’s Programs department
– Utilize dynamic coaching styles to encourage growth and manage productive conflict
– Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement
– Ensure that staff members on the team receive timely and appropriate training
– Work with leadership to ensure investments are sustainable and in line mission, vision, and values
– Continue to foster a culture of strategic decision-making around expenditures
– Monitor and report on program financials
– Ensure that programs have sound financial strategy and financial systems and controls in place
– Build relationships with local schools, arts organizations, nonprofits, and social services agencies in order to support CMCB’s positive impact throughout Boston
– Act as an ambassador for CMCB and speak persuasively on our mission and vision in local, regional, and nationally-prominent settings
– Listen carefully, speak persuasively, and anticipate concerns of parents, students, faculty, staff, board members, external partners, donors, and the public.

Qualifications

– Bachelor’s degree or other equivalent professional experience in the arts or education field is required
– Minimum of five years leadership and work experience in nonprofit, education, or philanthropy, overseeing multiple programs
– Knowledge of and experience in music, the arts, education, and public school settings
– Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and the ability to empower staff at all levels of the organization
– Strong management skills, an adaptable style to work collaboratively, and an enthusiasm for management
– Demonstrated experience managing a high-performing, multicultural team in a structure that includes professional development and mentorship
– Strong analytical skills and the ability to coach others to think strategically
– Proven ability to work in an evolving organization and make informed decisions in the context of strategic organizational goals and policies
– Must be organized, detail-oriented, and have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
– Excellent critical thinking skills with the ability to effectively prioritize
– Strong relationship builder with the ability to find common ground, build consensus, and strengthen collaboration among diverse stakeholders
– Ability to handle confidential materials with discretion
– Proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and Google Suite
– Must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S as CMCB is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time

Preferred

– Fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and/or Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) is highly desirable
– Proficiency with databases and/or registration software systems
