Responsibilities:
The health and safety of our employees come first in Delta’s industry-leading people-focused culture. To improve the health and wellness of Delta pilots, the Director of Pilot Health Services will play a leadership position on the wellness team at Delta and work with Flight Operations and other divisions. All of Delta’s workers, their dependents, and the communities we serve are positively impacted by this role’s contributions to the wellness team.
Regarding fitness for flying, medical queries, including but not limited to medications, vaccines, and FAA medical certificate requirements, the Director will act as a medical resource for all of Delta’s pilots throughout the company’s whole system. The director will also support the quickest and safest restoration of pilots to full flying status following illness or disability. The director will provide information on public health and safety concerns related to any unforeseen natural, biological, or man-made incidents to Delta’s administrative groups.
- Reports to Delta’s Vice President of Flight Operations, with a dotted line to the Managing Director of Health and Wellbeing for Delta Wellbeing Initiatives and non-AME-specific activities.
- In charge of all AME-specific duties, including those that pertain to DPAC, fitness for duty, disability, and return to work.
- According to the Pilot Working Agreement (PWA), performs the duties of Director of Health Services (DHS) for the Delta pilots.
- Pilot Wellbeing and Health
- Considerations for pilots’ regular health maintenance and preventative care
- Education and awareness about mental health
- Education and awareness about substance abuse
- Pilots’ health plan considerations and provisions
- Ad-hoc assistance for field directors on pilot leaves due to illness or infirmity
- To ensure that a pilot’s medical case is processed completely and quickly, act as a liaison between the pilot’s AME, the FAA, and the disability provider.
- At the corporate, industrial, and governmental levels, represents the Company and its interests in topics pertaining to aviation medical rules and procedures for commercial airline pilots.
- In accordance with the PWA, is in charge of medical reviews, including Return-to-Work.
- The following people are in charge of the DPAC pilot programs for substance abuse and rehabilitation at Delta:
- Selection, administration, and support for DPAC HIMS AME
- Management and choice of treatment facilities
- The following will be covered in the program’s oversight:
- Providers of testing administration
- Testing procedures and companies
- Processes and reviews following results
- To the DPAC Steering Committee’s medical advisor
Requirements:
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM)
- The ideal candidate will hold a Senior AME qualification from the FAA and be a medical doctor (MD).
- Possesses both a medical or osteopathic doctorate and board certification in the candidate’s field of expertise.
- The candidate will have at least 10 years of AME experience and at least 5 years of Senior AME experience.
- It would be ideal to have prior experience as a director of health services.
- Easily establishes and/or maintains good working ties with FAA leadership.
- Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate complicated medical information to leaders of Flight Operations, medical practitioners, and labor relations experts in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Capable of using office administration software designed specifically for corporate office operations and case management in the healthcare sector. using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook in the environment.
- Shows a good attention to detail and time management.
- Shows a willingness to question the existing quo while being consistent, competent, and in complete accordance with Delta’s policies and procedures.

WHAT (PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS) WILL GIVE YOU A COMPETITIVE EDGE
- Board Certification in Occupational Medicine is preferred
- Internal medicine, family medicine, or emergency medicine board certification are strongly encouraged.
